RYA Yachtmaster® Theory Course

An advanced course in navigation and meteorology for candidates for both the Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate.

The syllabus makes some provision for the revision of subjects in the Day Skipper Course but for those who have not acquired the knowledge set out in the Day Skipper Course are unlikely to be able to assimilate all the subjects covered in this advanced course in the time available.


The assumed level of knowledge before starting this course is the Day Skipper Shore based Course.


Who is it for?

  • Candidates with a minimum of the Day Skipper (Shore based Theory Course)

The Yachtmaster® Theory Course topics include:

  • Advanced navigation

  • Pilotage and passage planning

  • Revision in the IALA buoyage system

  • Advanced meteorology

  • International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (IRPCS)

  • Fog navigation including blind pilotage

  • Advanced tidal planning

  • Rescue procedures

  • Effective crew management


How long is the course?


5 day intensive or 26 evenings at night school, or 3 weekends, Sat – Sun. One to One or home/office/corporate tuition is available at (extra cost) Email for details.
